Bridge Deck Replacements for Bridges in Middlesex County, New Jersey

These three bridges, as part of a larger subcontract with Ammann & Whitney, were bridge deck replacements on which M&J Engineering performed Construction Inspection and Office Engineering for the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). These projects were unique in the fact that they ran concurrently or in immediate succession, as they were part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Due to this, the projects were on a high-paced schedule from award in September 2009 to substantial completion in August 2010 and needed strict EEO, Payroll, Material Certifications, Inspection Reports, and other records.

Construction of the bridges included both high-strength concrete placement poured-in-place (in cold weather and otherwise) and precast superstructure units transported on flatbed trailers and placed with cranes. Guide rail, precast construction barrier (PCCB), and other traffic safety devices, such as VMS, construction barrier, cones, etc., were needed. The largest issue on all three projects was the safety of vehicular and pedestrian traffic based on a Traffic Control Plan (TCP) with police supplement. All projects finished on schedule.
