Rehabilitation of Five I-278 Bridges in Staten Island and Brooklyn, D900041, PIN: X731.47

The New York State Department of Transportation has initiated a $78 million project to rehabilitate five I-278 bridges. Four of these bridges are on the Staten Island Expressway and its service roads over Mosel Avenue and the Staten Island Railway tracks, and the fifth is the 79th Street Bridge over the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn. This rehabilitation project complements other recent NYSDOT improvements to the I-278 corridor, and will deliver an improved riding surface and enhanced safety for motorists and pedestrians.

The Five Bridges:

  1. I-278 Westbound and Service Road over Mosel Ave
  2. I-278 Eastbound and Service Road over Mosel Ave
  3. I-278 Westbound and Service Road over Staten Island Rapid Transit
  4. I-278 Eastbound and Service Road over Staten Island Rapid Transit
  5. 79th Street Bridge over I-278

PROJECT APPROACH

The project was designed with the community in mind. To minimize disruptions, the contractor will be removing the existing concrete roadway in large sections in order to reduce the use of demolition equipment. New precast concrete beams will be fabricated off-site for the four Staten Island bridges. In Brooklyn, a temporary bridge will be installed adjacent to 79th Street. This allows the work to be done in one construction stage, which reduces lane closures and daily work operations, resulting in less disruptions for local residents and commuters.

PROJECT BENEFITS

Structural rehabilitation to bridge decks, bearings, steel and piers (Brooklyn)

  • Complete bridge replacement (Staten Island)
  • Safety improvements to bridge barrier and railing
  • Sidewalk improvements
  • LED lighting and drainage improvements
  • Elimination of deck joints, which will prevent deck leaks, reduce maintenance and prolong bridge life
