NYSDOT - Kew Gardens Interchange Reconstruction

M&J Engineering's is providing Construction Inspection Services for the Reconstruction of the Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) from Union Turnpike to 82nd Avenue in Queens County, New York City. The CI Services being provided are centered on ensuring that the work of the contractor conforms to the provisions of the contract documents and is performed in conformance with NYSDOT Safety policies. CI Services include detailed inspection, on-site field-testing of materials including field measurement and collection of data necessary to submit monthly and final estimates and progress reports, and preparation of asbuilt plans showing all changes from the contract plans.

The scope of work includes:
  • Milling the existing asphalt, repairing deteriorated concrete slabs, and placing a new asphalt overlay
  • Widening the at-grade Van Wyck Expressway by constructing a new concrete pavement lane in both directions
  • Reconstructing the median barrier, drainage system, retaining walls, and other appurtenances
  • Removing and replacing four overpasses over the mainline to accommodate the new alignment
  • Removing and replacing superstructure, repairing wing walls and abutments of two additional bridges
  • Reconstructing a pedestrian tunnel under the VWE in the vicinity of Main Street
  • Temporary Guide Signs along Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) and all Approach Roadways for Maintenance and Protection of Traffic
  • Sign Structures and Permanent Guide Signs after Widening of the Roadways and Bridges
  • ITS components and reconstructing the subway underpass for the NYCTA Briarwood/Van Wyck Station
  • Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) 145,000 vehicles
