Third Track Expansion Design/Build Project Overview

MTA Long Island Rail Road

$1.8 Billion

Ongoing, 2022

M&J Engineering, P.C. under contract #6240 is providing independent Construction Quality Control Services to 3rd Track Constructors (3TC) - a consortium of Dragados USA, Picone, CCA Civil and Halmar – on this $1.8 billion megaproject. The Third Track Expansion Project aims to reduce traffic congestion both on the roads and on the Main Line by providing a more reliable alternative for Long Island commuters. The project consists of the construction of a third track on the Main Line between the Floral Park and Hicksville train stations that will allow for bi-directional service. This 9.8-mile stretch of railroad will increase the capacity of the LIRR all while providing improvements to the environment, safety and local community quality of life.

This project focuses on:

  • Renovations of passenger rail stations, including ADA accessibility and longer platforms
  • Construction of the third track along the Main Line to avoid residential relocations and require less commercial land acquisition
  • Reduction of roadway delays and noise by eliminating seven street-level grade crossings
  • Improvements to railroad infrastructure such as signal systems, power substations, culverts and switches
  • Enhancements to seven rail bridges to eliminate bridge strikes and fit the third track
  • Installation of sound attenuation walls to reduce noise levels throughout residential areas
