NYSDOT, Construction Inspection FOR the Reconstruction of Van Wyck Expressway I-678 from Union Turnpike to 82nd Avenue in Queens County, NY

Construction Inspection of the Reconstruction of Van Wyck Expressway, NYAs a sub-consultant to Greenman-Pederson Inc. (GPI), M&J Engineering is performing construction inspection and is serving as the Office Engineer for the reconstruction of the Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) from Union Turnpike to 82nd Avenue in Queens County, NYC. The scope of work includes the following tasks:

  • Mill the existing asphalt, repair deteriorated concrete slab, and place a new asphalt overlay
  • Widen the at-grade Van Wyck by constructing a new concrete pavement lane in both directions
  • Reconstruct the median barrier, drainage system, retaining walls, and other appurtenances
  • Completely remove and replace four overpasses over the main line to accommodate the new alignment
  • Remove and replace superstructure and repair wing walls and abutments of two additional bridges
  • Reconstruct a pedestrian tunnel under the Van Wyck in the vicinity of Main Street
  • Perform landscaping and other environmental enhancement work included within the project limits.

The construction work is to be done in several stages and involves closing lanes and detouring traffic for several months. Night work and weekend work is expected during the four-year construction period anticipated for this project.

The Construction Inspection Services that M&J is performing as part of this project is centered on ensuring that the work of the Contractor conforms to the provisions of the contract documents and with NYSDOT safety policies.

Services to be performed include detailed inspection, on-site field testing of materials, and other construction activities as necessary, including field measurement and collection of data necessary to submit monthly and final estimates and progress reports, and preparation of record plans showing all changes from the contract plans.
