NYSDOT - Major Deegan Expwy (I-87) Bridge Rehab D262391

As a sub-consultant, M&J Engineering's is performing Construction Inspection Services for this $134 million contract. This project is located on the segment of the Major Deegan Expressway (MDE) between E. 138th Street and the Macombs Avenue. Bridge work on this project includes the demolishing and disposing of existing 330,000 sq. ft. of concrete deck on the northbound /southbound roadway of the I-87 MDE and replacing it with new concrete. The work also involves the installation of a new concrete median barrier, between E. 138th St. and E. 161st St., near the Macombs Dam Bridge. A new energy-efficient LED lighting system will also be installed, enhancing visibility and safety on the elevated Major Deegan roadway and on Exterior St. below. The existing drainage systems will be upgraded on the MDE and on Exterior Street resulting in an improved drainage and run-off condition. Other work included in the project consists of the following:

  • Existing Fascia steel beams replaced with new steel beams
  • Bearing replacement, steel repairs, clean and paint steel
  • Substructure repairs
  • Mill and overlay approaches
  • Placement of a new Permanent Variable Message Sign, (VMS)
  • Widening of NB exit ramp to 149th Street
  • Thermoplastic pavement striping
  • Replace Concrete decks/concrete roadway pavement - Three ramps onviaduct structure (Ramps L, D, G) and two at-grade (Ramp R, Q)
  • Deck replacement with precast panels and in some sections deck repairs. (Ramp A)
  • Removal and replacement of 2" asphalt overlay and application of waterproofing membrane
  • Coordination will be required with MNRR, NYC Parks, Related retail Corporation, Yankee Stadium)
  • Erosion and Sediment Control
  • Installation of protective shielding
  • Asbestos removal and disposal
  • Class A containment for paint removal
  • Coordination with Metro-North MTA Railroad
  • Relocation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including installation of various sizes of ITS Fiber Optic cables, ITS control and meter cabinets
